Summary

How many times a day do you stare at the description of a modifier and wonder “that’s great, but how do I use it?” Or maybe you are reviewing some denials in your worklist and you are pretty sure that a modifier would help to reverse the denial, but you just aren’t positive on which one? My favorite scenario is when the payer’s guideline regarding modifier usage does not align with your understanding of the coding/billing guideline for that modifier.

If you have ever faced one of those scenarios, rest assured, you are not alone. Many of us who face billing, coding and payer guidelines on a regular basis are faced with these dilemmas around modifier usage. Let’s put more “black and white” into these gray circumstances.

Disclaimer: Please note that all concepts, resources and material are related to modifier usage in physician billing.
