Auditing for the 2021 E/M Guideline Changes

When the new guidelines for E/M go into effect January 1, 2021, auditors will have one more set of rules to apply to a distinct group of E/M codes. This will create new gray areas and new requirements that must be considered during the auditing of these services. We need to be prepared to apply new thoughts and nuances to the audit of these unique services.

In this workshop we will begin with a discussion of why we audit and the benefits it provides when performed correctly. The discussion will then move to the process of auditing, including how to make a good selection based on a well-thought-out scope. The discussion will then focus on auditing this unique set of codes. Each of the three elements of medical decision making will be addressed. We will go through examples of documentation for medical decision making and time. The workshop will wrap up with keys to conveying the findings in a well documented report.
