Whether you’re a working professional or a student preparing for your CIC® exam, you’ll find the intuitive, color-coded format of the ICD-10-PCS Expert 2024 makes assembling accurate and complete PCS codes a snap.

The ICD-10-PCS Expert 2024 goes well beyond the basics. It helps medical coders accurately report procedures performed in an inpatient setting. In addition to including the official Alphabetic Index, Tables, and ICD-10-PCS Official Guidelines, we’ve crafted a select set of features based on requests from coders in the field.

Key features and benefits:

  • 2024 ICD-10-PCS Official Conventions and additional conventions and symbols
  • 2024 ICD-10-PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
  • Yellow-highlighted orientation lines to indicate the hierarchy of qualifiers associated with main terms
  • Full-color anatomical illustrations to help you accurately identify which part of the body the code describes
  • Complete Approach Table with definitions and examples listed at the front of the book for quick reference
  • Medicare code edits symbols to identify edits for gender, limited coverage, noncovered procedures, hospital-acquired conditions (HAC), associated procedures, combination clusters, and non-OR procedures affecting MS-DRG assignment
  • Appendices for root operations definitions in alphabetical order by Tables, body part key, device key and aggregation table, character meaning, substance key, combination clusters, and non-OR procedures not affecting MS-DRG assignment
  • Pre-printed adhesive tabs to help you find specific sections quickly and easily
  • Spiral binding allowing the book lays flat for easy coding, scanning and printing, and durability

The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) is a code set used to classify diagnoses in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.

The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) is a coding system used to classify procedures performed in the inpatient setting.

Preorders may be cancelled at any time prior to shipment. If your books have already shipped, please refer to the return policy tab, which states all returns must be submitted within 30 days of the shipment date. Call (800) 626-2633 to cancel or return your order.

Because the code sets for each book are updated every year, it’s essential for coders to use the most current book to ensure accurate coding. Reporting wrong codes can lead to denied claim submissions and substantial penalization. It’s imperative healthcare professionals stay up to date on new codes and changes, which means obtaining new code books every year.

All AAPC exams are based on the current year’s code sets. The previous year’s books may be used on an exam, but they may be inaccurate and result in errors. The upcoming year’s books are not allowed for exam use.

For example, all exams administered in 2020 are based on the 2020 (versus 2021) code sets. Code books from 2019 may be used on the 2020 exams, but you risk using outdated or incorrect codes.

Refer to the chart below to find the books and resources allowed at various exams.

All AAPC exams require the ICD-10-CM medical code book

The ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes are implemented each year on October 1.

The CPT® codes are implemented each year on January 1.

The HCPCS Level II codes are implemented each year on January 1.

Customers who purchase AAPC code books receive code updates and other important information in our monthly email newsletter.

Yes, both ICD-10 books contain the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting. In ICD-10-PCS, the guidelines appear in the front of the book. In ICD-10-CM, the full guidelines appear at the front of the code book, but chapter-specific guidelines also appear at the start of each chapter, making it easy for you to know which guidelines apply to the codes in that chapter without having to flip back to the front of the book.

Guidelines may be altered after printing of the book. You can find updates on our website on the Medical Coding Books Updates support page. This way, you always have access to the most current guidelines.

HCPCS Level II, Procedure Desk Reference (PDR), and Procedural Coding Expert (PCE) all include modifier information pertinent to the code set in the book. There is a modifier appendix in each book, and HCPCS Level II and Procedural Coding Expert (PCE) also include pertinent modifiers on foldout covers of each book, making access to modifier information quick and easy.

ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS Level II, and Procedural Coding Expert (PCE) all include information on new, revised, and deleted codes. Each book includes a section listing all the new, revised, and deleted code changes for that code set for that year. Plus, within the codes there are symbols designating which codes are new or revised for that year.

ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS Level II, and Procedural Coding Expert (PCE) all include information in the book’s introduction reviewing the symbols and conventions in the book. Additionally, the code chapter pages of the book include a legend showing the symbols and their definitions.

While not intended to teach anatomy and terminology, every AAPC code book includes over 30 pages of full-color anatomical illustrations to help you with anatomy and anatomical terminology.

Notes pages are included in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS Level II, Procedure Desk Reference (PDR), and Procedural Coding Expert (PCE).
