Become a Certified Professional Coder (CPC^®)

Course Summary

AAPC training ensures students have the knowledge to pass the certification exam and the necessary job competencies to succeed in their medical coding career. Our course follows a learning process that first teaches concept, followed by practical application training. Each student will participate in lectures, reading assignments, quizzes, chapter tests and practical application assignments to ensure a well-rounded learning experience.

The course is approximately 80 hours and covers the following competency areas:

• The Business of Medicine
• Review of Anatomy and Medical Terminology
• Intro to ICD-10-CM and Coding Guidelines
• Intro to CPT^® and HCPCS Level II and Coding Guidelines
• Coding for Integumentary System
• Coding for Musculoskeletal System
• Coding for Respiratory System
• Coding for Cardiovascular System
• Coding for Hemic & Lymphatic Systems, Mediastinum, Diaphragm
• Coding for Digestive System
• Coding for Urinary System and Male Genital System
• Coding for Female Reproductive System / Maternity
• Coding for Endocrine System and Nervous System
• Coding for Special Senses (Ocular and Auditory)
• Coding for Anesthesia
• Coding for Radiology, Pathology & Laboratory
• Coding for Evaluation & Management Services
• Coding for Medicine

Once students have completed the competency training, they will have the necessary skills and knowledge to challenge the certification exams. By successfully passing this exam, students will be awarded the CPC^® credential.

Available Training Options

Virtual

Virtual training is conducted online through a virtual classroom where you will attend live lectures by your assigned AAPC instructor and be able to interact with other classmates. Virtual training is just like being in a classroom, but with the safety and convenience of attending class from anywhere. Students will need access to a computer with reliable high-speed internet and webcam.

Online - Instructor Led

Students follow a structured schedule using the online course as their primary learning method. However, you will also attend live weekly review classes virtually with your AAPC instructor. Instructors will also hold regular office hours where students can schedule time to meet virtually with their instructors for additional help. Students will need access to a computer with reliable high-speed internet and webcam.

Online - Self Paced

The online self-paced course is designed for students who want complete flexibility to follow their own schedule and study independently. AAPC coaches will be available to answer questions via email or chat. Students will need access to a computer with reliable high-speed internet.

Requirements

A strong understanding of medical terminology and anatomy is tested thoroughly during the CPC^® exam. If you need a refresher or do not have experience in these subjects, we strongly recommend taking the online anatomy and medical terminology courses prior to taking the CPC^® preparation course or certification exam.

Required Course Materials

Students will need the following medical coding books for the CPC^® Preparation Course:

• AMA's CPT^® Professional (current course year)
• ICD-10-CM (current course year)
• HCPCS Level II (current course year)

Any other materials such as workbooks or study guides will be included with the course.

Computer Access

Students will need access to a computer and reliable high-speed internet.
Students taking a virtual class, should also have a built-in or external web-cam.
