Find Exact Neuroplasty Code for 1 Nerve, 1 Toe

Question: My podiatrist used an open approach to incise scar tissue to relieve tension on one of the digital nerves in one of the patient’s toes. Which CPT® code should I report for this procedure?

Nebraska Subscriber

Answer: You should report code 64702 (Neuroplasty; digital, 1 or both, same digit) for this procedure.

“Neuroplasty is the surgical decompression or freeing of intact nerve from scar tissue, including external neurolysis and/or transposition to repair or restore the nerve,” according to the CPT® guidelines.

Digital nerves defined: Digital nerves are sensory nerves that run along each side of a finger or toe along with arteries and innervate the fingers and thumb.

Don’t miss: You should report 64702 for an open neuroplasty, which includes external neurolysis. If your podiatrist also documents use of internal neurolysis with an operating microscope, you could report add-on code +64727 (Internal neurolysis, requiring use of operating microscope (List separately in addition to code for neuroplasty) (Neuroplasty includes external neurolysis)) on your claim as well.
