Decipher Tumor Excision Code Choice

Question: My podiatrist excised a 2 cm in diameter tumor from just beneath the patient’s skin on his ankle without removing a significant amount of surrounding normal tissue.

Florida Subscriber

Answer: You should report 27618 (Excision, tumor, soft tissue of leg or ankle area, subcutaneous; less than 3 cm). This code includes any simple or intermediate closure your podiatrist performs. However, you could report complex closure, neuroplasty, and adjacent tissue transfer (ATT) separately.
