Industry Note:

Code Nonroutine Supplies Accurately Or Risk PPS Rates

Policymakers soon will begin the process of "rebasing" PPS rates. Will you get enough credit for the supplies you provide? The HIPPS code you submit for a final claim should end in a letter if you provide supplies and a number if you don't, HHH MAC NHIC reminds HHAs in a tool regarding accurate nonroutine supply (NRS) coding. But your claim will be returned if you list a HIPPS code ending in a letter and fail to include supply revenue codes. "Ensure the information submitted on your final claim matches the information in the patient's medical records for the episode," NHIC instructs in the tool at www.medicarenhic.com/RHHI/rhhi_publications.shtml. "Be sure to submit the appropriate supply code(s) on the final claim if supplies were provided during the episode."
