Anesthesia Coding Alert

READER QUESTIONS:

TEE Maps to Different Code Now

Question: Do some patients have to have transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) performed under anesthesia and others not? Why should I use 01922 instead of 00740 or 00500? California Subscriber Answer: The TEE codes (93313-93318) now map to 01922 (Anesthesia for non-invasive imaging or radiation therapy). You may no longer use the other ASA codes. It is extremely rare for this procedure to be performed without anesthesia. Code 01922 is used in this case because the imaging here is essentially an ultrasound -- that is, non-invasive imaging.
