READER QUESTIONS:

Use Subsequent Visit for Subsequent Days

Question: I have a question about the femoral catheter (64448) placed for post-op pain management status, post total knee. This is placed solely for the management of post-op pain per surgeon request. I have not billed this code with subsequent days and the code holds no global day. On the subsequent day after the surgery, can I bill the catheter as 01996? Texas Subscriber Answer: The code range to review is 9923-99233 (Subsequent hospital care ...). Choose the level of service upon the documentation you are provided. The code description for 01996 is "Daily hospital management of epidural or subarachnoid continuous drug administration." This does not meet the requirements for "management of post-op pain."
