Does anyone here use an E code along with 996.X when coding for a VP shunt malfunction?

TIA

I have before, but I don't always use an E code for shunt malfunction. It really depends on what the problem is that's causing the shunt to malfunction. What's the issue your patient is having? I can give you a less vague answer if there's a specific problem :)

Shunt malfunction

The catheter was pulled out of the ventricle. Patient presented with 'vomiting and irritability'. CT showed his ventricles were slightly enlarged compared to previous scans.

I would think that would be fine to use providing the shunt being pulled out wasn't caused by the patient. I would just use 996.2 if the patient was the cause.
