Can an MD, who is not a Psychiatrist, use psychotherapy codes? Ex. 90832

No they have to have BH background- they cant just be an MD and bill for BH services.

They actually can, if they are qualified to do so. HOWEVER, insurances won't likely pay as they are not credentialed as a behavioral health provider.

This code does require that the Clinician indicate the therapeutic intervention utilized (i.e., CBT, solution-focused therapy, etc.).
One must consider the scope of state license as well as clinical practice/education. CPT indicates that this code can be billed by physician or other qualified
health care professional. I work with advanced psychiatric nurses who are eligible to bill this code due to their advanced education/training in psychiatric-mental health nursing.
This then goes back to credentialing, as stated prior.
