Hello,

I'm confused  about preventive medicine and smoking cessation services being billed together on the same visit.

The guidelines I read them and understand that these two services should be provided on a separate encounter.

CPT 2014 Preventive Medicine Services

Codes 99381-9937 include counseling/anticipatory guidance/risk factor reduction interventions which are provided at the time of the initial or periodic comprehensive medicine examination. ( Refer to codes 99401-9412 for reporting those counseling/anticipatory guidance risk factor reduction interventions provided at an encounter separate from the preventive medicine examination) The QM person advised the doctors to bill 99406 along with the preventive medicine code. Which I disagree. Can anyone confirm I'm interpreting the guideline correctly.

Thank you!
