Hello

Can anyone tell me how post op's should be coded. If in the 90 day Global Period I have been coding Z98.890 with a 99024. Should I be coding the diagnosis code that was used for the surgery?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,
LLR

Depends...... I'll use a subsequent encounter code if available, e.g., S52.502D, or a status code. Our billing service doesn't even transmit the 99024 unless there's an xray or something that needs to be billed. We have found that some payers don't like the Z codes as primary (like United Healthcare). In that case, I'll use the diagnoses code used for the surgery as primary and the status code as secondary.

when billing aftercare for a surgery that was for an acute injury or trauma (S code),the aftercare diagnosis should be the same DX with a D suffix.I Use Z48.89 with aftercare for non-traumatic injuries
