Good morning,
any assistance would be helpful, I coded a path report which had the results of
sinus contents, removal:
A. chronic sinusitis- 473.9
B. septal bone and cartilage:
-benign bone and cartilage I coded it as 213.0
I was told not to code the benign code because it is a normal finding. is this correct and if not is there guidance anywhere that I can find to support my decision

thank you

sinus contents

Hi, you will code 88305 with chronic sinusitis, coding the 213.0 in my opinion would be wrong. It is benign ~ normal sinus contents. Since there was no pathological abnormality you would want to assign the reason why the specimen was provided to the pathology department.
I hope this hopes,

Agreed. Sometimes pathologists will say "benign" to mean "normal," which is different from "benign neoplasm." If it said "benign neoplasm," then you would use a neoplasm code.
