Can anyone tell me how useful the Coding and payment guide for Laboratory and pathology is from Optum to someone trying to learn to read path reports and code them?
Ty in advance

I don't know about Optum coding products (United Healthcare owns them), however supercoders Path/Lab Alerts are full of useful knowedge. You can see past articles going back years and years.

I will look into it. At a total loss. No experience at all reading a path report.

I am not sure what kind of reports you are coding. I code and bill the professional component of 88104 - 88367, and 85060 & 85097. The CPT lists the specimens under
each code for the Surgical Pathology codes 88300 - 88309. My path reports come over
with the CPT on them but we have to watch that it is the correct code for the specimen.
There are also stains etc. that are used to process the specimens 88312, 88342. CPT will tell you how to report them. 88311 is a decalcifation procedure I see a lot. Hope this helps.
