Coding cytology fluids for group of Pathologist has me very confused as to correct CPT codes.
Please guide me.
Pathologist insist on using the 88162 ext study 5 slides or more. Two examples follow.
1. Cerebrospinal Fluid: Gross description. Received 1.5 ML of clear fluid labeled tube 2, from which four cytospins are prepared and stained with papanicolaou and giemsa stains.

2. Peritoneal Fluid - Ascites. Received 1000+ ML of amber colored fluid, from which four cytospins are prepared and stained with papanicolaou and giemsa stains.
With this information is it correct to use the 88162 as the Pathologist say?

Hello,
Cytology is billed by procedure, and 4 cytospins (88108) would not be considered excessive and would not warrant an 88162. Good luck
