I spent way too much time looking into this and thought I'd just throw it on a thread...

Pt comes back in for pain in R arm since she rec'd H1N1 vaccine. Dr dx'd:
Injury, nerve, due to injection (H1N1) (R)UE

Isn't there an E code to explain this too? Is there another more appropriate code?

See E949.6 for your E code. To see how I found it, go to the Table of drugs in the ICD-9 book and go down to vaccines then to influenza. For therapeutic use it takes you to E949.6.

A question

Is the injury to nerve due to the NEEDLE or is it due to the VACCINE (effect of the drug itself).

If it's the needle look for an E-code for needlestick hypodermic E920.5

If it's the vaccine use the drug table for the effect.

Hope that helps.

Okay, so I'm sure with the way it's written that it's from the needle. I did see that code but I was uncomfortable with using the "Accident caused by hypodermic needle", especially since it has needle stick and contaminated needle listed as examples.
