I am having trouble deciding whether to use mod 59 or 79 with the cpt codes for postop and preop xrays......help!!! Still learning and this stumps me.

My experience with the 59 modifier is that it is mostly used with oncology infusions. The 79 modifier terminology is specific for your postop period. It sounds to me like you would be best served to utilize the 79 modifier.

59 mod

We use the 59 mod in radiology for any distinct procedures, today I appended a 59 mod to a 70450 since we also did a 70480 looking for 2 specific different problems. The 79 is used for 2 unrelated procedure or services by same physician during the post-op period only. Hope this makes sense to you.
