Wiki Modifier 59 or 91 for CPT87186

Hello, Sometimes I get cases with CPT 87086(urine culture) along with CPT87186 done multiple times because they are testing for different microbiology susceptibility studies. My results may show E coli,Staph,Strep etc. would I append a modifier 91 to CPT87186 or 59 stating the different results I received? Not sure. Thank you!

Hi - You may want to see if the payer has posted a policy on using 59 on a repeated code. Another idea is to post on the path/lab forum or the forum for the specialty involved. Perhaps someone there can offer some insight from experience.
