Can you unbundle 80050 to bill Medicare when Medicare is secondary to a commercial insurance that accepts 80050? I would think not, but I was hoping that someone could give a definitive answer why or why not. Thank you!

Hello SMorris13,

From my understanding that whatever was sent to primary insurance and "was paid" and was NRP to Medicare that was deemed "no", it was apples to apples here. You cannot change anything here. So, if primary insurance paid on the claim and now secondary insurance reviews the claim and says nope that it is a solid no. If anyone else has other experience here, please chime in. But that has always been my understanding. I'm pretty confident in my answer as I think about my discussion with my billers. It was apples to apples for charges here. But again, would love any feedback if anyone has some to offer here.

Thanks,

Dana

It's like a $11 write off for Medicare as secondary here if I recall all these years. This is a small fish in a pan of larger fish to capture revenue here of course in my absolute opinion.

Thank you for your reply. This is what I was thinking also.
