This always confuses me. When our Dr. does a Lower Anterior Resection sometimes he will do a Ileostomy on the other side, not a colostomy. So is it still the same as 44208 or is it 44207 and 44310 ?

Thank you,
Marie

There is significant disagreement on this both within coders and surgeons. Although the CPT book does say colostomy creation, it may apply to an ileostomy creation as well. When the code was developed, it described BOTH external openings, so the codes were valued to include either an ileostomy or a colostomy. Karen Zupko, an expert in GS believes that 44208 should be coded and NOT 44207 and 44187; however, I have seen many (including AAPC Q&A make the case that colostomy means colostomy. https://www.karenzupko.com/coding-a...ct coding is,performed instead of a colostomy.
