Hi, I was hoping to get feedback on a sample question that was posed in a local review class:

A patient is admitted for abdominal pain and has a positive HIV status.

The person presenting said to code 042 first and then ICD-9 for abdominal pain.

Several of us strongly disagreed--arguing that the principal code should be the abdominal pain, followed by V08 for the seropositve status with no HIV-related condition documented.

Would love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks!
