Good morning everyone
I bill hospitalist visits. I need some help coding history of chikungunya. I don't know if I use 066.3 chikungunya fever because there is no evidence that the patient still has the virus. Patient was recently hospitalized because in a trip to Haiti she got the virus. Now she is at the hospital with the same symptoms but no test have been positive for the virus yet. Should I use the 066.3 for the history of? or should I wait for the test results before using that code?
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

066.3 is not a code for history of the illness it is a code for the acute presentation. You can assign it only after the provider documents thus condition, there is no code for history of a viral illness. If the patient presented with symptoms then code the symptoms. Also a lab test must be interpreted by the physician, a coder may not code from a laboratory results print out, even if the provider signs the printout. The provider must provide documentation of his/her interpretation.
