Hi all. If a patient takes to much of their diabetic medication and becomes hypoglycemic. How would you code that? Dr is stating hypoglycemia due to medication. When I look up E16.0 there is an excludes 1 note that states d/m w/hypoglycemia but only indicated E09.x not E11.649.

TIA

Taking too much of a medication is poisoning, it is either intentional or accidental. So you follow the guidelines for poisoning and use the T code for the poisoning firstlisted and then the E11.649 for the diabetes with hypoglycemia. It is not E09 as the drug did not cause the diabetes.
In addition the exclude 1 note in my book does include all the diabetes categories including E11.649.
