Wiki colon polyps

It is my understanding that if there is a polyp found any where in the colon it is consider a polyp. However; it just came to my attention that one of my providers thinks that it must be located above the cecum to be consider a colon polyp and that anything below is not and would be called a rectal polyp. He thinks it should not be coded the same.

Which is correct? would 211.3 be the correct code for it or should I be using something different if located below the cecum?

Thanks for the help, Katrina

Anything below the sigmoid colon would be considered taken from the rectum - or rectal polyp - before the anus. The cecum is at the 'beginning' of the large intestine - near the ileocecal valve where the colon/large intestine joins the small intestine. Perhaps you mistakenly heard 'cecum' instead of 'sigmoid'?
Hope this helps.

I appreciate your reply. I am sure that is what I meant to write, sorry about that.
I still am wondering about the coding for a rectal polyp. Would it still be coded 211.3 or something different?
