We had a patient with necrotic colon who had a left colon resection, which was left "in discontinuity" and the abdomen was left open, with the plan of staged closure; however, the patient died the next day and no further surgery was performed. Would this be coded as 44141-52, as no colostomy was created and there was no anastamosis? Or would 45399, unlisted procedure code, be the better approach?
