We have a new Pediatrician in our office and she would like to bill cpt code 96161 (Edinburgh depression screening) for the mom on the babies well visit chart. Can we do this?

Thank You
Monica Salvatore, CPC

You are able to bill with with a Well visit for the baby. We do bill for this for both mother and father at our pediatrics office. We don't always get paid for both but they are noted in the chart so we bill for them, as it benefits the patient.
-96161-Administration of caregiver-focused health risk assessment instrument (e.g., depression inventory) for the benefit of the patient, with scoring and documentation, per standardized instrument-
The requirements to report either 96160 or 96161 are as follows:
Practice expense is incurred to administer the instrument (such as nurse time or for purchase of the screen).
The instrument is standardized.
The instrument is scorable.
The results are documented in the medical record.
The maternal depression screen was added to the 2017 Recommendations for Preventive Pediatric Health Care \. The service is billed under the pediatric patient, not the mother.
Not all payers will pay for it, but they do pay. I hope that helps.
