We bill for a psychologist in our practice. When the new codes came out I was reviewing them with him. I realized at that time he was billing his services out of the Psychiatry section versus the Behavioral Health section. I'm new to Pysch billing. Can anyone tell me the difference? When would you use the Psychiatry codes (ie 90791) versus the Behavioral Health codes (ie. 96156). Thank you.

The behavioral health codes are used when the patient is being seen to help cope with or manage a physical health condition. They require a physical health diagnosis (cancer, heart disease, etc.)

Most likely, he will continue using the psych codes he is already using. Also, you cannot bill a psych code and a behavior code on the same day.
