Hi,
We have an unusual case coming up and I was wondering if any other outpatient surgery clinic coders have experienced this situation and could advise on any additional diagnoses I could search for to justify this procedure. We often see children and patients with behavior issues or mental deficits that make it impossible for them to have dental care in a regular dentist office setting. This patient is an adult, otherwise well, but has a severe allergy to all the -caine drugs that his regular dentist would use for anesthesia to treat him for a regular filling and/or root canal in their dental center.
(Of course the final coding will all depend on the thorough nature of the dentist's dictation in the record...) I am looking to send Z88.4 "Allergy status to anesthetic agent" but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this situation and had any tips?
I was looking for more descriptive diagnoses...something along the lines of "encounter due to allergy status" or anything that may describe to insurance the reason for this otherwise well adult patient to be seen at our center for a seemingly normal dental surgery and why he will be receiving anesthesia (general or other) . Thanks!
