Is there specific guidelines for how many hours a patient has to be in observation to use the codes 99234, 99235 or 99236? At one time Medicare specifically stated it had to be a minimum of 8 hours to use those codes and you had to still meet the 3 key requirements for each level. So If a pregnant patient is admitted and discharged on the same day but was only in for 3 hours, can I still use these codes or do I only charge an admit to observation code?
