I have a question about billing contrast. I have a provider that bills 74178 and wants me to bill the contrast component as well. Does anyone know what is required in the documentation and what code is appropriate? They told me to use hcpcs Q9967 or 96374. However, the cpt code book states that 96374 is included in the procedure.

The HCPCS code for the contrast is dependent on type of contrast used. Google the name of the contrast and you should be able to find the appropriate HCPCS code - Q9967 is for contrast containing 300-399 mg/ml of iodine. The contrast is separately payable, the injection of the contrast is included in the procedure. Q9967 is billed on a per ml basis. List the number of ml in the quantity field. Some payers require a description of the contrast, others do not
