Is CPT code 62362 payable for an assistant surgeon? According to AAPC 62362 is billable with an AS modifier but Blue Cross is stating invalid procedure code/modifier combination.

CMS has assigned assistant surgeon indicator '0' to this code which means that "restriction for assistants at surgery applies to this procedure unless supporting documentation is submitted to establish medical necessity." If your local Blue Cross plan follows CMS guidelines for assistant surgeon payment, then you would need to appeal this with records supporting the need for an assistant in order to get payment; however, I would recommend reviewing the plan's policy first to find out if they will allow for this.
