I hate using unlisted codes and try to avoid it if any way possible, I work at a surgery center and I'm pretty new to coding/billing, just finished my AAPC class!

Patient had a diagnostic laparoscopy, IUD retrieval. The IUD was found in the right fimbrial margin with some adhesions attached. The IUD was successfully removed without damage.

Our coders coded 49329 which is an unlisted code for laparoscopic IUD removal. The referring doctor's coders used 49402 - which is removal of peritoneal foreign body from peritoneal cavity.

What makes me not be able to use CPT 49320 or 49402?

Thank you for any help or advice!!!
