Question: Can CPT® code 28299 be used for a patient that does not have a bunion and has double osteotomies, such as hallux rigidus or osteoarthritis?

Answer: You can use CPT® code 28289 (Hallux rigidus correction with cheilectomy, debridement and capsular release of the first metatarsophalangeal joint). Code 28299 (Correction, hallux valgus (bunion), with or without sesamoidectomy; by double osteotomy) is specific code for bunion deformity and hence cannot be used for a non-bunion procedure.
