Report This ICD-10-CM code for Diabetes 1.5

Question: Our provider recently documented a patient as having both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. I have heard of this being called diabetes 1.5, but I cannot find an ICD-10 code for it. Can you shed any light on the condition?

Answer: Diabetes 1.5, also known as latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), is a condition that has characteristics of type 2 diabetes, such as adult onset and resistance to, or deficiency of, insulin, but that is more closely related to type 1, due to its autoimmunity to certain antibodies and to the patient’s low BMI.

Due to the fact that LADA is a specific form of diabetes, it is most correctly coded to one of the E13.- (Other specified diabetes mellitus) codes. According to the AHA ICD-10-CM Coding Clinic Vol. 5, No. 3 (2018), that would be E13.65 (Other specified diabetes mellitus with hyperglycemia), as hyperglycemia would be the most common complication from the condition.
