Don’t pass up the chance for a little more Medicare money if you operate in one of the lowest-population areas in the U.S. “Section 4137 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 extends the rural add-on policy by providing an increase of 1 percent of the payment amount made for home health services provided in the ‘low population density’ category for CY 2023,” the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reminds home health agencies in a recent MLN Connects. Do this: “Home health agencies should continue to report value code 85 and an associated Federal Information Processing System (FIPS) state and county code on all claims,” CMS instructs. A December HHS Office of Inspector General report on the home health rural add-on estimated that 4 percent of home health claims lack a valid FIPS code (see HHHW by AAPC, Vol. XXXII, No. 2).
