Overview 

Chattanooga State Community College offers comprehensive educational programs designed to equip students with the skills and credentials needed for successful careers. By focusing on both traditional students and adult learners, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds, the college ensures its graduates can secure family-sustaining jobs within their communities. 

Approach 

In 2019, Chattanooga State transitioned its Health Information Management (HIM) program to a Medical Coding and Billing Associate Degree program to better align with job market demands and student needs. Kelli Squire, the Program Director, spearheaded the integration of AAPC’s curriculum, as well as Codify and Practicode into the program. This strategic shift was driven by a commitment to providing students with relevant, high-quality education that prepares them for the challenges of the healthcare industry.

Since implementing the new program and curriculum, Chattanooga State has achieved impressive outcomes: 

• 100% Exam Pass Rate: All graduates have passed the CPC exam, underscoring the effectiveness of AAPC’s curriculum. 

• 2X Increase in Applications: The program has experienced a significant growth, with applications doubling, indicating rising interest and recognition of its value. 

• Employment Success: Graduates typically secure employment within a month of graduation, with local healthcare organizations actively seeking out these highly prepared candidates. 

• Student Empowerment: The program has not only provided technical skills, but also boosted the confidence of its students, many of whom come from challenging backgrounds.
