How are you handing zero charge items that are built into the system for productivity purposes and other operative functions?

We have items such as hot and cold packs that are item that we do not charge for but we have to keep track of them for productivity.

We add an internal modifier NC (no charge/no claim) and post that line with a zero charge. That way it still shows that the patient was here/ supply was used, but no claim goes out. Also gives us the ability to track it with our reporting system.

In our system, we can mark items/codes to be non-billable. If you can set this up, it would be the easiest method. Otherwise mark the item at a 0 charge. The $0, should not print on claims and should run on reports.
