I'm a recent graduate and I would like to hear about your first job on your path to working as a medical coder? Do you recommend getting into a good company in any position?

I'm just curious why everyone is going to college to learn coding. Seems like many people who attend a "college" for coding struggle with it more than say a hairdresser who took the AAPC backed courses. Are you working towards RHIT?

I actually took both paths--first went to a school to just get a medical coding certificate (only coding was taught). Then, I decided I wanted to get my RHIT, so went on to get a two-year degree in Health Information Technology (and sat for and passed the RHIT). The HIM degree programs may not put as much emphasis on "just coding" as other programs may as the degree program is preparing students to launch into the HIM field in general, not just specializing in one area (such coding). If coding is the true path of the HIM/RHIT student, then extra study needs to be given during those courses as well as perhaps pursuing a practicum that emphasizes coding practice more.

The difference between taking AAPC courses and pursuing a college degree may make a difference when deciding whether one wants to work as a coding specialist or eventually have the education to support moving into management. Also, the environment matters too...an urban hospital in a competitive area may require a degree whereas a private practice may not, just an example.
