Wiki Wound Care Codes 97597 & 97598

Wound care staff is asking about charging for these debridement codes specifically -- is it the size of the wound or the size of the slough they are debriding from that wound -- for example, the wound is 10 x 20 cm (200sqcm) with an area of slough 3 x 4 cm (12 sq cm), and 3 x 2 cm (6 sq cm)? Thanks!

The articles I have read state to assign the wound care codes based on the area debrided, not the size of the wound.

The February 2011 Coding Edge notes, "Total area treated must be documented to code appropriately."

Thanks! I know that is the case with many of the wound care codes and is clearly stated --just not clearly noted for these. I'll review the article you mention.
