Hi all,

can someone please help me out with the following questions?

1) If a patient was born with a "congenital" heart defect and was later repaired, is this patient still considered to have a "congenital" heart disease?

2) How would I bill the above scenario? Do I continue to bill for the transthoracic echo code for "congenital" heart diseases (93303) OR should I bill from now on, the transthoracic echo code for "non-congenital" heart disease (93306)?

Your input is much appreciated!!

1. would still be considered congenital. Per Dr. Z, "once congenital, always congenital"

2. You would go with the congenital code.

Unless they had a transplant. After transplant, if any residual congenital remains, use congenital codes.
