Could someone please assist me? Are there any clear guidelines on coding a vulvectomy as opposed to excisional biopsies? This area of coding seems so gray to me. Is there a way to tell which procedure a provider is doing? I thought we were coding vulvectomies correctly until I watched one done on YouTube. Now I'm not at all sure we are coding these procedures correctly. GYNONC coders, can you help?

Hi Cindy

Vulvectomy is when the vulva is removed.

Excitional biopsy is when tissue is being removed for sample.

Exam: Breast biopsy is performed when a lump is found on a breast; and in order to find out if it is cancerous or not they must perform the biopsy, by removing the lump(tissue sample) and sending out for testing.

Hope this helps.
