Our office owns the video EEG equipment. The patient will take it home and record for 24+ hours then will return the equipment to our physician to read and interpret. CPT 95951 seems to be the most correct code to use, however the test is unattended and when we try to submit for authorization we are told we are providing the service in an incorrect POS. I have read multiple questions similar to this on other coding sites, and they are referring to us 95953 which we use for an ambulatory EEG and does not include the video portion.

Any ideas?

95951 vs 95953

I have found documentation that no addl allowance for video. I am researching the same subject. We have had issues with POS as well. I have been trying to obtain carrier policies for 95951.

95951 vs. 95953

I am needing documentation regarding these codes. I have a client that is told that 95951 is the wrong code even though they are videoing the test. The payer is claiming that it should be 95953 because it is unattended. The problem I see is that the 95953 does not include the video portion.

I read the 95951 as attended or unattended since it is not specified.

Thoughts? Comments?

Answer in CPT Assistant

This is a question that has recently come up with us and in researching found this question and answer in CPT Assistant from 2014 December issue in the FAQ's. It's not the answer we were hoping for but unless someone can give me other documentation we will have to go by it. To summarize it says:

Q. Is code 95951 the correct code to report for an unattended home portable ambulatory video EEG?
A. No. Code 95953 should be reported for an unattended home portable ambulatory video EEG.

Also, in CPT Assistant from 2011 February issue titled Neurology and Neuromuscular Procedures -

95951 is used for recordings in which interpretations can be made throughout the recording time, with interventions to alter or end the recording or to alter the patient care during the recordings as needed.

Since we are doing unattended video recordings it sounds like 95953 is what we need to do. Agree?

Ambulatory Video EEG at Home 95953

8/24/18 Per a Reimbursement Specialist at the American Academy of Neurology: The correct CPT code for Ambulatory Video EEG at Home is 95953. This is a common question. The code language is ambiguous bc 95951 includes word video but 95953 is for ambulatory and that is meant for a patient who is hooked up and sent home. 95951 is meant to be an attended code and immediate interventions can be made to change care.
