Several of our stroke patients who do not have any residual effects of TIA to fall under the 438 category are being coded with V12.54, however the AAPC ICD9 manual disqualifies this as a non "PDx" primary diagnosis

What is the appropriate ICD9 to utilize for a f/u visit for a patient with a History of TIA, not acute without any neurological deficits. The patient had experienced transient aphasia but had been resolved therefore not codeable.

V12.54 is an acceptable 1st listed dx code. I am not sure why your book states different. The coding guidelines will identify for you which V codes are secondary only and 1st listed only all other V codes can be either.
