I am new to coding for urology. There has been some questions regarding urodynamics. The nurse usually performs the urodynamics and the physician reads and completes written the report. The question is do I charge for urodynamics before the report is completed or do I need to wait for the provider to complete the report. Sometimes the provider may take several weeks before he completes the report and I believe the report should be completed within 48 hours of the urodynamics. Any advise? Thanks

We work them as they drop, so no I don't think you need to wait. However, I have never seen one with a lag of several weeks.

I would not code and bill for something where I know the documentation is not complete. Providers should be completing documentation in a timely manner. Medicare states as soon as "practicable." At least one MAC gives a specific timeframe (I think that's where 48 hours may come in) but most give vague guidance like "timely" "practicable" "soon after completing the service". While there may be differing opinions on how long that is, I think everyone would agree that several weeks is simply too long. Many hospitals and healthcare systems have an internal policy for this. My personal opinion is that 7-10 days should be the maximum.
