I am struggling with one of the sleep codes and would like some advice. I have spoken with several offices that use the 780.57 unspecified sleep apnea for the initial consult. The patient is then sent to a sleep lab where the diagnosis is either confirmed or not. I know the code is in the symptoms, signs, and ill defined conditions section in the ICD-9 book but, aren't we labelling that patient with an unproven diagnosis? Several insurance companies deny the sleep study for anything other that 780.57.
Thanks
