I have a pediatric patient who was eligible for coverage under two different insurances. The subscriber on both is the child's father. In this case, I was under the impression that the insurance that had been in effect longest should be considered primary. But as best I can determine, both policies began on the same date. Are there industry-wide standards to cover situations that are more difficult than the birthday rule, or are these determined by the companies involved?
