A patient came in to be seen for a work injury to be billed to Workers Comp. While she was in the office the doctor also treated her for a rash that would be billed to insurance. Two charts were made for the patient each with a chief complaint, ROS, and exam. Can 2 E/M's be charged for this patient for the same day?

two E&M's

Yes you may. At our practice the doctors will see a patient for an MVA or Workman's Comp on the same day as a scheduled appointment, just make sure the visits are documented seperately. They get billed to their respective payers. You aren't billing to the same insurance company. Yes you may bill for two of them. Wait till you see a Wellness and an E&M on the same day :))))).

Thanks for your input! So you are saying that since we are billing 2 different companies it is OK to do 2 e/m's? What about if a patient is seen in the morning for a cut on her arm and is treated, we bill her insurance and then later that evening she comes back because she has twisted her ankle and we see her again. This would be billed to the same insurance so we should not charge another e/m right?
