For a patient with OA in the carpometacarpal joint, the provider performed a "Trapezium Excision with Metacarpal Suspension."
- Incision made on radial aspect of hand / wrist starting at base of first metacarpal extending to radial styloid
- Sharp dissection was made through skin and subcutaneous tissues
- Sensory nerves/ tendons identified and protected
- Joint capsule incised and reflected off the trapezium
- Trapezium dissected free from soft tissue and removed; no remnant bone found
- Thumb was held in abduction with slight traction and secured in position with suture anchors from base of second metacarpal with a SutureTape suture, which was then placed on first metacarpal (good suspension)
- Wound was irrigated well and closed with sutures
- Placed in thumb spica splint
Thank you in advance!
