Wiki Time Based Coding - Records review

I work in a specialty group, where most of the E&M coding is based on time. Can review of medical records prior or after the visit be inclusive of the "face to face" time? I am getting a lot of kick back from the physicians because they feel that it should. Please help.

It is my understanding that in the outpatient setting, time based billing only includes services provided face-to-face with the patient and/or family.

If you are talking about inpatient setting, then yes, review of records would count as "unit/floor time"

If they were reviewing the records with the patient, then that time could be counted.
